Why stay in Asakusa
Tokyo can feel overwhelming on a first visit: dozens of neighborhoods, each with a different personality. Asakusa is where many travelers fall in love with the city. It is old Tokyo — temple gates, paper lanterns, rickshaws and narrow shopping lanes — but still connected to the rest of the city by subway in minutes.
Top things to do in and around Asakusa:
- Senso-ji Temple — Tokyo’s oldest temple, entered through the giant red Kaminarimon Gate.
- Nakamise Street — the shopping lane leading to Senso-ji, lined with snack and souvenir stalls.
- Sumida River — riverside walks and river cruises.
- Tokyo Skytree — Japan’s tallest tower, just across the river.
Asakusa is also calmer at night than Shinjuku or Shibuya. And in the Agoda data we checked, it had more 9+ rated hotels than any other Tokyo neighborhood — many at mid-range prices.
