Why stay in Kyoto Station
Kyoto was Japan’s imperial capital for more than a thousand years, and it shows: temples, shrines, gardens and wooden townhouses fill the city, and 17 of its historic sites are listed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the most rewarding places to visit in Japan — and one of the busiest.
Kyoto Station is the practical choice. The area is modern rather than historic, but it puts the shinkansen, JR lines, subway and the city’s main bus terminal at your door. That makes sightseeing — and day trips to Nara, Osaka or Fushimi Inari — much easier, especially with luggage.
Top things to do in and around Kyoto Station:
- Fushimi Inari Shrine — the famous tunnels of red torii gates, two stops away on the JR Nara Line.
- Higashi Hongan-ji and Nishi Hongan-ji — two large temples within walking distance of the station.
- Kyoto Tower — city views right opposite the station.
- Kyoto Ramen Koji — a ramen food court inside the station building.
