Why stay in Gion & Higashiyama
This is the Kyoto most people picture: wooden teahouses, stone-paved lanes, lantern light in the evening and the chance of seeing a geiko or maiko on her way to an appointment. Gion and Higashiyama hold many of the city’s most famous sights within walking distance of each other.
Top things to do in and around Gion and Higashiyama:
- Hanamikoji Street — Gion’s best-known street of traditional teahouses.
- Yasaka Shrine — at the top of Shijo Street, beautifully lit at night.
- Kiyomizu-dera — the hillside temple with its famous wooden stage.
- Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka — sloping lanes of old shops leading to Kiyomizu-dera.
- Shirakawa canal — a willow-lined canal, especially pretty in cherry blossom season.
A note on etiquette: some private lanes in Gion are off-limits to tourists, and you should never photograph geiko or maiko without permission.
